Most people buy ottomans because they add a touch of class (and some good foot support) to their living rooms. But the ottoman is more than just a foot rest. With some thinking outside the square, your ottoman can offer you a variety of uses you may never have considered.

1. Foot stool

We’ll tackle the most common purpose of the ottoman first. With their comfortable foam cushioning and low profile, ottomans serve as the perfect foot stool.

Select a colour combination that suits your sofas and you have the perfect arrangement to put up your feet at the end of a long day.

2. Extra hide away seating

We’ve all experienced that exasperating moment when we have more guests than seating to offer to them all. The ottoman makes an ideal transition from foot rest to seating. With its sturdy legs or base, lush fabrics and soft cushioning, your guests will be just as comfortable on your ottoman as they would be on your sofa.

If you’ve chosen a larger round or oval ottoman, such as this Helene Oval Ottoman, you can have even more space and flexibility in your seating arrangement since more people can sit all around its circumference.

Fashion seating around the room with the ottoman in the centre and everyone will be able to have an easy conversation without having to crane their necks to see one another.

The ottoman’s low height also makes it the perfect put-away seating. You can tuck it under shelving or tables and bring it out only when it’s needed – great for when you have scant space.

4. Coffee table

It’s already in front of your sofa, so why not double your ottoman up as a coffee table? It’s a suitable height and sturdy enough to support a solid tray with teapot, cups and saucers – just make sure you use a tray, because scrubbing spilt drops of tea out of your quality fabric will be a hassle later!

If you have smaller ottomans, such as this Portobello Ottoman Footstool, you can even place them either end of your sofa to have more stylish, matching coffee table ends.

5. Additional storage

Some clever ottomans provide a storage cavity inside their vast space. This makes for a great place to put away throws, cushions, or anything else you need close at hand in the lounge room.

Alternatively if you’ve got a little bub around, the ottoman makes for a great toy box to hide away all the child’s toys, yet keep them readily available for whenever your child wants that train set or Etch A Sketch.

6. Bed bench

Have you ever thought of placing an ottoman at the end of your bed? It’s the perfect seating arrangement to help you put on shoes and socks. But it also adds a stylish element to your bedroom.

7. Aesthetics

These days you can get pretty plush ottoman designs that will become the centrepiece of any living room.

Whether your ottoman has distinctive deep pocket patterns or castor fitted legs, it will be a statement piece that draws the guests in and gets them talking about your interior décor style.

8. Sofa bed transformation

Ottoman designs are pretty complex these days, which means their alternative uses are becoming more and more creative and impressive.

Some ottomans, such as this Sonja Ottoman Sofa Bed transform from a stylish cube ottoman into a sofa bed when a guest comes visiting.

It’s great if you don’t have a spare guest bedroom – or indeed much space in your living room – but you need that extra sleeping spot for when a friend comes to stay.
