Sitting Down With Hannah Amos

Recently we sat down with former The Block contestant Hannah Amos, to discuss how her style has changed since the show, how she styles her own home, and the trends to look out for in 2020.

How has your experience on The Block evolved your furniture choices?

“The biggest thing that I have taken away from my experience on The Block is that style is so personal. Ultimately at the end of the day, if you are creating a space for yourself and your family to enjoy, select pieces that reflect your own lifestyle and personalities.”

“These are what I call my ‘comfort pieces’ and you get what you pay for. Invest in quality materials that offer rest and ultimate comfort.”

Has Melbourne’s culture changed your interior style?

“My style has definitely evolved since moving to Melbourne. I would say that probably has a lot to do with the fact that I have identified my own personal style. I will always be a Far North Queensland girl at heart, so our home has a very relaxed-boho vibe. It’s full of reclaimed furniture that we have upcycled, with splashes of pink touches throughout; because PINK makes you happy! It’s been scientifically proven… Google it!”

What is your biggest tip for cultivating your own interior style?

“Start with what inspires you. What makes you happy? You probably already have things all around your home that would help you to identify your own personal style. Also, be sure to observe your natural surroundings. Are you close to the beach? In which case you might like to stick to a coastal vibe. Does clutter give you anxiety? Opt for minimalism. Jump onto Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration that will help lead you on your own style journey. There are basic fundamentals of interior design, but don’t take it too seriously. Just enjoy the process and don’t get too caught up with ‘The Rules’.”

What changes do you make in your home to update within seasons?

“Every 6 months we declutter! By declutter, I mean pop it back into the cupboard where I rotate my way through all my home-wares.”

“Winter is all about layering, with heavy blankets and using warmer tones and hues throughout. We also like to move our furniture, the way you use your home in the Winter versus Summer is probably completely different. In my family, Winters mean more nights cozied up by the fireplace, watching TV and enjoying a glass of red wine with my husband, so my furniture reflects that. In the Summer, we spend more time outside and less time watching TV. Moving furniture around helps get your home summer-ready. I also ditch the formal place settings at the dining table since my kids are more likely to eat outside.”

What are your favourite interior trends this summer?

“So many things to get excited about! I can’t pick one, so here are my top three.

  1. I’m loving that we are all making a conscious shift to shop more sustainable; which means buying furniture from materials that have been sustainably sourced, or buying products made from recycled materials.

  2. The curve trend has got me all excited. Curved sofas and high-back armchairs in gorgeous rich velvets give an instant glam vibe.

  3. Lastly, colours are such a personal thing, but some just have a more calming feel to them. Earth tones, taken from nature, will remain big news for the foreseeable future, as will orange, pink, and various shades of blue and green in both warm and cool hues.”

Which is your favourite summer piece by Brosa?

“I can’t go past the Oslo 3 Seater Modular Sofa. Not only for style, but value for money! The Scandinavian inspired sofa oozes comfort and appeal. It’s the kind of sofa you never want to leave and envelops your entire body.”

You visited our Fitzroy Studio+ during our opening weekend, where you where one of the first to experience our free, forty-five minute style consultation that we offer.  What did you love most about this experience?

“I’m very much a visual person – I generally work off of mood boards when creating my own projects, so I was delighted to see this was one of the design services on offer. I supplied a few images of artwork and existing furniture in our house and we selected some beautiful armchairs to compliment the overall look.”

For our customers considering booking in for our free design services, what benefits do you think this will help in their room or product selection?

“Whether it is a single item purchase, a room-refresh, or a complete home redesign, the team can help you better understand the lifestyle you want to create in your home.”
