Sitting Down With Hannah Amos

Sitting Down With Hannah Amos

by Brosa Design · Jan 17, 2020

Recently we sat down with former The Block contestant Hannah Amos, to discuss how her style has changed since the show, how she styles her own home, and the trends to look out for in 2020.

How has your experience on The Block evolved your furniture choices?

“The biggest thing that I have taken away from my experience on The Block is that style is so personal. Ultimately at the end of the day, if you are creating a space for yourself and your family to enjoy, select pieces that reflect your own lifestyle and personalities.”

“These are what I call my ‘comfort pieces’ and you get what you pay for. Invest in quality materials that offer rest and ultimate comfort.”

Has Melbourne’s culture changed your interior style?

“My style has definitely evolved since moving to Melbourne. I would say that probably has a lot to do with the fact that I have identified my own personal style. I will always be a Far North Queensland girl at heart, so our home has a very relaxed-boho vibe. It’s full of reclaimed furniture that we have upcycled, with splashes of pink touches throughout; because PINK makes you happy! It’s been scientifically proven… Google it!”

What is your biggest tip for cultivating your own interior style?

“Start with what inspires you. What makes you happy? You probably already have things all around your home that would help you to identify your own personal style. Also, be sure to observe your natural surroundings. Are you close to the beach? In which case you might like to stick to a coastal vibe. Does clutter give you anxiety? Opt for minimalism. Jump onto Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration that will help lead you on your own style journey. There are basic fundamentals of interior design, but don’t take it too seriously. Just enjoy the process and don’t get too caught up with ‘The Rules’.”

What changes do you make in your home to update within seasons?

“Every 6 months we declutter! By declutter, I mean pop it back into the cupboard where I rotate my way through all my home-wares.”

“Winter is all about layering, with heavy blankets and using warmer tones and hues throughout. We also like to move our furniture, the way you use your home in the Winter versus Summer is probably completely different. In my family, Winters mean more nights cozied up by the fireplace, watching TV and enjoying a glass of red wine with my husband, so my furniture reflects that. In the Summer, we spend more time outside and less time watching TV. Moving furniture around helps get your home summer-ready. I also ditch the formal place settings at the dining table since my kids are more likely to eat outside.”

What are your favourite interior trends this summer?

“So many things to get excited about! I can’t pick one, so here are my top three.

  1. I’m loving that we are all making a conscious shift to shop more sustainable; which means buying furniture from materials that have been sustainably sourced, or buying products made from recycled materials.

  2. The curve trend has got me all excited. Curved sofas and high-back armchairs in gorgeous rich velvets give an instant glam vibe.

  3. Lastly, colours are such a personal thing, but some just have a more calming feel to them. Earth tones, taken from nature, will remain big news for the foreseeable future, as will orange, pink, and various shades of blue and green in both warm and cool hues.”

Which is your favourite summer piece by Brosa?

“I can’t go past the Oslo 3 Seater Modular Sofa. Not only for style, but value for money! The Scandinavian inspired sofa oozes comfort and appeal. It’s the kind of sofa you never want to leave and envelops your entire body.”

You visited our Fitzroy Studio+ during our opening weekend, where you where one of the first to experience our free, forty-five minute style consultation that we offer.  What did you love most about this experience?

“I’m very much a visual person – I generally work off of mood boards when creating my own projects, so I was delighted to see this was one of the design services on offer. I supplied a few images of artwork and existing furniture in our house and we selected some beautiful armchairs to compliment the overall look.”

For our customers considering booking in for our free design services, what benefits do you think this will help in their room or product selection?

“Whether it is a single item purchase, a room-refresh, or a complete home redesign, the team can help you better understand the lifestyle you want to create in your home.”

Hannah Amos: Top 5 Summer Trends for 2020

Hannah Amos: Top 5 Summer Trends for 2020

by Brosa Design · Jan 14, 2020

Brosa Design partners with The Block’s Hannah Amos, designer and interior stylist who takes us through her top five interior trends for Summer 2020.

Sustainable & Mindful Choices

‘Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.’ – William Morris

To me, this quote means creating a sustainable home in a slower, more considered way, evaluating what you really need and buying less, but better. Summer 2020 will see a shift towards meaningful change, with environmental and social awareness driving many of our shopping decisions. It is all about making mindful choices and thinking of the impact of our actions, including our purchases. Expect to find biomaterials in homes in 2020, such as building supplies made from recycled products and ethically sourced materials. Mindfulness is emerging as a clear trend for 2020.

The Roma Sideboard is a stunning piece, featuring unique brass foil detailing and matching gold metal legs and handles. The Roma has been expertly crafted using solid mango wood, which is known for its strength and sustainability.

Home Is Where the Bar Is

Staying in has become the new going out and entertaining is bigger than ever. Offering both style and convenience, the bar cabinet is the perfect entertaining accessory.

Blame it on the fact that we are all too tired to head out, or that we are looking to bars, restaurants and hotels for interior inspiration, to create a relaxed, bar-like feel at home.

Consider your bar cabinet a key focal point of your room, it should always tie in with the rest of your interior aesthetic and be treated as a visible decor piece. To make it a cohesive statement in your room, pair it back with an eye-catching artwork and keep it chic and visually interesting with tonal accessories, pretty glassware and fresh or dried blooms.

Check out my pick of the Alpina Bar Cabinet if you are feeling inspired to embrace this trend.

Back To Nature With Earthy Tones

If you love rich earthy hues, soft pastels, or moody blues, you’re in for a treat. These are the top palette picks you’ll be seeing everywhere in 2020. Earth tones will remain big for the foreseeable future, and the revival of green is hot on the list for 2020.

Millennial pink has had a good run for the past couple of years. However, 2020 is a time for change, and green will be taking centre stage. Paint brand Dulux has selected a cool-tone shade of green as its Colour of the Year for 2020, which is meant to offer an antidote to an “increasingly disconnected” modern society. Dulux says that Tranquil Dawn “embodies the nation’s mood on the approach of a new decade”. “It reflects a growing desire to understand what it is to be human at a time when advances in technology are making us feel increasingly disconnected from each other,” explained the brand.

While sage green has begun to make its mark for the upcoming year, the indoor plant trend is going nowhere and 2020 we’ll see more of us bringing some of that colour into our walls. Soft olive greens are extremely soothing and create a calm energy in a space, while also pairing well with natural light timber.

The Kate Daybed is sure to make all your friends green with envy.

Curves In All The Right Places

Step aside straight lines and sharp edges – the curved furniture trend is here and I am here for it! Interior design trends in 2020 come in all different shapes and sizes and curves is one of them; it’s an easy way to totally refresh your interiors and make a statement.

We are seeing a major comeback of this popular mid-century inspired design, especially when it comes to upholstery. Expect to see them everywhere from architectural arcs, mirrors, bath tubs and of course, it will remain trending for sofas and armchairs. As much as we love drooling over these kinds of vintage pieces in antique shops, the reality is they are often pretty pricey. But fear not, for the curved armchair of your dreams is here and totally in your price range. I introduce to you… the Seta Armchair. Designed for modern contemporary homes, the generous proportioning gives a soft luxurious feeling. Seta is perfect for sinking in and lounging in comfort.

The Seta Armchair will take your living area to a new level of style.

A Marble Moment

Forever elegant and sophisticated, marble has a long history in interiors and it is here to stay. With its soft, unpredictable veins and endless colour and pattern choices, it will bring glamour to every corner of your home.

This year, marble will be present everywhere! Whether a small vase, coffee table or entire wall, it will add impact and timelessness to your interior. Its adaptability to both classic and modern spaces makes the natural material so versatile and easy to work with.

Metals are marble’s best friend and anything with warm tones goes; think gold, copper or brass. To keep the look refined, don’t overpower the room with too many luxe metals, instead look to marble furniture with gold gilded edging, decorative trays and elegant vases that beautifully marry the two materials.

My favourite? The Cushla Side Table with its classic gold detailing.

The Modern Style: How to Transform Your Home with Modern Décor

The Modern Style: How to Transform Your Home with Modern Décor

by Brosa Design · Nov 14, 2018

Just like modern culture, modern home decor takes cues from just about every style and makes it into a mix of eclectic elements. The sleek, natural lines of Scandi style, the rugged look of Industrial style, and the flair of Glam all influenced Modern decor.

Now, you’ve decided to remake your living space in Modern style. We’re here to tell you where to start and what the most valued characteristics are. Don’t tie yourself to these guidelines. Don’t be afraid to experiment. It’s your home, decorate as you like.

Flooring: Keep It Simple

Simple flooring modern hardwood

Modern style flooring takes cues from the Scandi style in its approach to being simple. Hardwood floors and veneers, with spare carpeting here and there, forms the backbone of a room decorated in modern style.

Modern style is all about opening up. You can see this in floor plans: most of the houses have as few rooms and separate spaces as possible. In houses designed with this school of thought, you could often see the kitchen and dining room, or the living and dining room, as a single larger space.

Overall, modern design uses a “less is more” approach. It is strictly minimalist and functional. The trick is to make your space seem as open as possible. Do this by rearranging furniture away from walkways or high-traffic areas, and by letting as much light in as you can. Getting larger windows might be in order. Let in some of that beautiful sunlight.

Carpeting: Restrict Rugs to Accent Pieces

Rug under modern accent coffee table

Because modern style is all about minimalism, you typically don’t use rugs or carpets. Sanded hardwood floors or even linoleum are the main floor materials, but linoleum is less attractive than wood.

Any area rugs used should be placed only under critical pieces like the coffee table or entertainment centre. If you choose to have one at all, of course.

Modern area rugs are typically muted and subdued: simple colours, simple designs, low piles. No shag carpeting, elaborate mandala patterns, or rainbows of colour.

Visual clutter is anathema to the minimalist mindset of a modern decorator. If you’re not going for a strict modern approach, you’re certainly free to spruce up your area rugs a bit.

Modern Furniture: Banish the Curves

Modern style dining room

Modern style furniture bases itself on straight lines. You won’t find many curved-back chairs or curved sofas. Everything is horizontal and vertical. It may look uncomfortable, but the presence of some plush upholstery deals with that nicely.

Modern furniture itself adds a splash of colour to the room, usually in the form of bright primary colours like red and blue.

When you pick out something like a Modern bedframe, find something with clean, straight lines. Avoid choosing a bed with ornate carvings, because it goes completely against the motif of simplicity. Modern design got rid of many of the earlier artistic sensibilities.

Layout: Eliminate All Clutter

Room with minimal clutter

A Modern design layout eliminates clutter. If you walk into a room decorated in modern style, you might be shocked at how empty it looks. That’s because all clutter is safely tucked away in alcoves.

You won’t see collections, personal knickknacks, pottery, or anything in the open. Less clutter means less chaos. Decorations are kept to a minimum and only used to enhance the room’s look. An example might be a chessboard on a coffee table.

This is why you might want to have cabinets and similar nooks for your books and other items.

Colours: Stay Neutral with Pops of Colour

Sofa with coloured rug

Most of the colours in Modern design are neutral, muted tones. These begin to look monotonous and drab after a while, which is why you should liven the party up with some bold accent pieces. That dusky black sofa can benefit from a bright red throw, pillow or cushion. Don’t worry; the Fashion Police aren’t going to dock points.

Don’t overuse accent pieces. They’re just that: accent pieces. Just one is enough to do the job in most rooms unless you have a larger room. For large, empty floor space, break up the monochrome with a bright throw rug.

Accents: Don’t Go Overboard

Blue accent chair in living room

You should keep the accent pieces to a minimum and place them strategically. Avoid placing pieces that have complementary colours: red and green, orange and blue, and other pairings. It hurts the eyes.

An accent piece doesn’t have to be a pillow or a rug. It can be anything that draws the eye, such as a personal decoration, a small collection of books, or anything intended as a conversation starter.

Accent materials include chrome, glass, and steel. These materials evoke an instant modern-style look. Think a 1950s diner, just without the neon tubes and an incessantly-playing jukebox.

Lighting: Open Up the Windows

Modern bedroom with large windows

Modern style began when electric lighting became more widely available. This style uses smaller light fixtures for bulbs, relying instead on natural light.

Therefore Modern decor living spaces have larger-than-normal windows. The curtains or blinds typically remain back, so sunlight can enter the room. It saves money on electricity.

If you want to have a decor scheme inspired by Modern sensibilities, just keep minimalism in mind. It’s similar to Scandi, but without as much reliance on natural hues and materials. In fact, in this, it’s pretty much the opposite.

Use neutral colours as your base for most of your decor and decide whether you want to create a warming or cooling effect visually with your accent pieces. Red, orange, and yellow are warming colours, while green, blue, and purple are cooling colours. Each has a different effect psychologically.

The Best Outdoor Furniture 2018: Your Definitive Summer Guide

The Best Outdoor Furniture 2018: Your Definitive Summer Guide

by Brosa Design · Oct 29, 2018

Find the best outdoor furniture that will perfectly complement your backyard, courtyard, deck or patio and make the most of summer this year.

Head outside, enjoy nature and take advantage of your outdoor space. Being outdoors has been found to improve your physical and mental health. And while ‘forest-bathing’ may not fit into everyone’s daily schedule, you can still get back to nature at home.

A beautiful and inviting living space in your backyard will give you a new place to relax, unwind, dine and entertain friends and family. Here are our tips for how to best use outdoor furniture to transform your outdoor space.

Outdoor Furniture and Styling Trends for Summer 2018

The best outdoor garden furniture this year is relaxed, sleek and very chic. These are some of our favourite trends gracing home and garden magazines, Pinterest and designer portfolios in 2018.

Go Retro-cool with Mid-Century Outdoor Lounge Sets

green modern outdoor furniture

Mid-century modern is a style trend that originated in the 1940s. Mid-century furniture is beloved by many for its sleek lines and fluid curves. Its popularity endures and shows no signs of letting up.

Mid-century furniture was a post-war style that emerged as an American reflection of international design movements like Bauhaus. It aimed to bring affordable, modern furniture into suburbs across America.

When it comes to outdoor furniture, mid-century modern garden furniture looks especially impressive against neatly manicured gardens or contemporary native gardens.

Glam up with Soft Textures & Relaxed Embellishments

multiple textured grey furniture

If you’re not sure why your outdoor space is not hitting the mark for you, it may be because it’s lacking some personality. Luckily, 2018 is all about glam embellishments.

Turn a bland space into a cool and exciting space with some cushions, a textured throw, a tray with candles and terrariums, a statement pot plant or a couple of books. These are just a few of the options available, which can add a little panache where needed.

The trick with adding outdoor accessories is to complement or contrast the main colours in your outdoor space. For example, if you have lots of bright coloured flowers in your garden, consider matching furniture accessories or finding bold, opposing colours that work.

Dine Alfresco with Modern Timber Tables & Chairs

Wine and dine guests under the stars with some sleek modern wood outdoor furniture. A well-made timber table can be a focal point of your outdoor space and a real talking point.

Modern outdoor dining sets look suave and can provide textural balance if your space is primarily concrete, brick or stone.

Modern, clean wooden outdoor furniture is always in. But in 2018, this design aesthetic is popular because of its earthy look and because it can be well protected against the elements. And with so many hues to pick from, you’re bound to find wooden outdoor furniture right for your home.

Make a Statement with Kaleidoscopic Colour

colourful outdoor wicker furniture

Technicolour craziness has moved from fashion magazines into our homes. The trend in recent years has been to unleash your inner wild and experiment with eclectic, rainbow palettes. The best looks balance out the zany colours with some neutral shades and natural textures.

Add a pop of colour with vibrant blue or green wicker outdoor furniture. As we’ll explain in the next section, wicker is known for its stylish curves and contemporary designs. It’s also weather resistant and lightweight.

Combine Industrial Metal Outdoor Furniture with Greenery

Industrial outdoor furniture and patio set

There is something about human-made shapes against a backdrop of wild greenery. The contrast is artful, yet amazingly easy to achieve.

Embrace the current trend of shades of grey, slate and black sitting neatly against an overgrown vertical garden. This stark contrast is sure to impress fellow lovers of design and give your outdoor area an opulent feel.

What Outdoor Furniture Materials Should I Choose?

Choosing outdoor furniture materials usually depends on your sense of style.  However, some furniture materials are easier to clean and look after than others. This is a rundown on the best furniture materials so that you can make the right choice for your home.

Weather-Resistant Wicker

a water resistant outdoor patio set

Polyethylene (PE) wicker outdoor furniture is made from synthetic fibres but looks like natural fibres. The main reason for using synthetic fibres over natural fibres because it’s more weather resistant.

PE wicker outdoor furniture is durable enough to last for years while maintaining its sophisticated look. It needs very little maintenance. Just hose it down when it’s looking a bit grubby, and let it air dry.

It is comfortable, with or without foam cushioning and will suit almost any interior style. Browse our collection of PE wicker outdoor furniture, which includes outdoor tables and chairs, and outdoor sofas.

Modern Timber

A timber outdoor dining set

Modern wood outdoor furniture comes in a range of styles, shapes and sizes.

Several kinds of timber are great for outdoor furniture. Teak is renowned for its durability and natural weather resistance. It is one of only a few timbers that produces a natural oil that repels water. Other kinds of wood include treated pine, eucalyptus and the warm tones of Merbau.

Wood does require a moderate amount of maintenance. Modern wood outdoor furniture should be sealed with varnish to prevent it from becoming stained or warped from rain or humidity.

When buying timber furniture, it may pay to check if it’s certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). They make sure the world’s forests are managed responsibly.

Durable Aluminium

grey aluminium outdoor furniture

Aluminium is a great outdoor furniture material. It looks great in modern settings and can withstand rain, sunshine and high temperatures. It doesn’t rust as easily as other metals, and it is very lightweight.

Aluminium outdoor furniture requires hardly any maintenance. Clean your aluminium metal outdoor furniture with mild soapy water. A powder coating will protect your aluminium furniture for even longer. Just make sure to touch up paint chips to avoid rust.

Heavy-duty Iron

heavy duty iron outdoor furniture

Need some outdoor furniture, but can’t find any good options because your backyard is a wind tunnel? Wrought iron outdoor furniture may help. Its impressive weight prevents it from blowing away and it can be powder-coated to protect it from rusting.

Cleaning is simple, but if you ever see a spot of rust, you will need to clean it, sand it and paint it again. If you care for it properly, it will be in the family for years to come.

How to Make Your Outdoor Space Work

Before you start creating your dream outdoor living space, it’s a good idea to consider how your outdoor space will function. These tips will make sure your newly designed outdoor space answers all your requirements, even the ones you haven’t thought of yet!

Divide and Arrange Functional Spaces

a modern outdoor dining set

Large properties can suffer from big blank spaces that can detract from the ambience of your outdoor space. It’s a good idea to divide your big backyard into sections, and then create individual functions for each space.

A spot close to the house is perfect for alfresco dining, such as the wooden outdoor dining set (pictured). Place an outdoor lounge setting in a picturesque spot and encourage guests to explore.

Add Some Versatile Storage

Imagine you have designed your dream outdoor living space. It’s perfect, not a blade of grass out of place. Now imagine it six months later. Is it the same?

If you can already imagine kids toys and gardening equipment strewn about, an unruly lawn and untrimmed plants, you should probably consider your storage options. Modern wood outdoor furniture often incorporates storage within for added versatility.

Light Up Your Life and Your Garden

You should be able to enjoy your outdoor entertainment area all day and all night so add some stylish outdoor lighting to make your space much more useful and versatile.

Incorporating outdoor lighting into your garden is also a great way to show off your landscaping and diffuse harsh white light. Or consider hanging some twinkly fairy lights in your favourite tree and arrange your furniture beneath it for a romantic dining experience at home.

Choose Native & Eco-friendly Gardens

Native plants make for stylish and contemporary gardens. They often require less water and lower maintenance. If these gardens aren’t your style, try some other plants that are good for the environment. Lavender and rhododendron plants are bee-friendly and are easy to look after.

Wicker outdoor furniture is the perfect blend of new and old. It looks great in a contemporary native garden or a more traditional garden.

Set the Mood and a Fire

Your outdoor space shouldn’t lie empty for half the year (or more). Investing in a safe and stylish fire pit, brazier or chimenea will keep you and your guests warm all year round.  What’s more, an open fire also adds to the ambience of your space. Just don’t forget to pick up some marshmallows!

Industrial Style: How to Go Barebones with Industrial Decor

Industrial Style: How to Go Barebones with Industrial Decor

by Brosa Design · Oct 23, 2018

Utilitarian and barebones to the core, the Industrial style aims to capture the essence of productivity. Exposed beams, prominent metalwork, clockwork-inspired pieces: you can almost hear a factory whistle.

Industrial styles can be used to enhance almost any interior space, from a loft to a reclaimed industrial project, and you don’t have to change all the decor. Ready to decorate in industrial style? Let’s get to work.

An industrial style study and furniture

Floors: Keep It Raw

There isn’t too much to say about an industrial-style floor, except that you likely won’t be using much carpet. After all, factories did not have carpeting.

Hardwood floors, laminate floors, or even a false-brick or concrete layout are the preferred looks for Industrial-style floors. The idea is that the area looks like it used to be a factory. In many cases, it did.

There won’t be a lot of floor paint, either. You want the colour and style to look as rustic and used as possible. You can get this look by letting the essential features of the room take centre stage and decorating around it. Exposed brick facades make an excellent starting point.

Industrial themed floor

Carpeting: Keep It Minimal

As mentioned, you won’t be using a lot of carpets. Rectangular area rugs break up the stark hardness of the floor, positioned in key areas, such as in front of a door. Choose rugs with simple geometric patterns.

Use basic lines and shapes. Industrial design is about simple and effective decor. If you use carpeting, use the smallest area rugs you can find and only put them where they need to be.

Embrace a Bit of Industrial Furniture

Industrial-style furniture is hardy. Not only in the sense of being sturdy but also looking purely functional. There isn’t a lot of flair or luxury in this style. It’s all about function.

Exposed frames, metal components, casters on chair wheels; anything that makes the furniture look streamlined and ready for use is a go in Industrial style. Blended materials and an overall unfinished look exemplify this motif.

Metal framework for chairs is a popular choice but be careful! If you plan on entertaining guests, you’ll need to make some concessions. People don’t like to have their backs against metal for a long time. Add some light cushioning to increase comfort.

Metal framework table and chairs

Layout: Reflect Functionality

The layout of an Industrial-style building should reflect functionality. Everything should be streamlined, leading from one element cleanly to the next.

Sofas, end tables, chairs, fireplaces, and other pieces of furniture should have a clear visual link between them. Placing them closer together might make it easier to visualize.

Industrial themed living room

Colours: Go for Unfinished, Earthy Tones

Earth tones work best here. Anything that makes the space look raw, unfinished, or dare we say harsh does the trick. Industrial style is no-frills and embraces browns, greys, and blacks. These are the colours of unfinished metal and wood, two of the most robust materials you could find in industrial construction.

To take some of the edge off these harsh colours, pick versions of them that are closer to warm tones. Rich dark browns, darker greys, and similar variants should help.

A bit of brighter colour here and there won’t grind the style to a halt: after all, you need to add a personal touch. Just try to make it subtle and sparing, and don’t deviate too much from the existing colour scheme.

Industrial coloured dining set

Accents: It’s All about the Metal

The most frequently used material in Industrial accents is metal, without a doubt. This makes sense because it’s meant to evoke images of the factories of old.

You can pick Industrial end tables, coffee tables, and any other furniture you want. The key is that it looks unfinished. The exposed framework does a great job at conveying this impression. If you’re converting a loft, consider leaving the rafters untouched.

Wheels turn the gears of civilization, so why not let that reflect in some of your accent pieces? Virtually any accent piece can be made into an industrial piece with the addition of wheels, casters, or clockwork-like accessories. This is the one exception for functionality.

Grey industrial accent lamp

Lighting: Create Contrast

High-contrast lighting is the key to making Industrial style work. Use exposed-filament bulbs. In other words, use bulbs without the coating on the inside, so you can see the bare filament through the glass.

These days you might have to concede with higher-powered fluorescent lighting rather than incandescent bulbs.

Set table lamps and floor lamps as close to your furniture as you can. You want to have plenty of light wherever you choose to base yourself in your room.

As you might have guessed, ornate lighting decor like chandeliers is of no use to this interior decoration style. The simpler your lighting is, the better.

Industrial style lighting set

As you’re picking out your decorations and furniture for industrial style, ask yourself how functional it looks. You want it to look bare-bones and efficient, but not at the cost of your guests’ and your comfort.

Stick to neutral earth tones, adding metal or wood accents where you can, and consider what other elements you can add to complete the look.

How to Pick the Best Sofa for Your Home

How to Pick the Best Sofa for Your Home

by Brosa Design · Oct 12, 2018

A sofa is much more than where you sit down after a long day at work. It’s a space for cuddling with your loved one, watching your favourite movies or shows, and even offering respite and comfort to guests.

Buying the right sofa is more than just securing a piece that’s on sale. You will probably have that sofa or couch for many years to come. It should be comfortable, complement the space, and offer the design and practical elements you need in the room.

While browsing a range of sofas can help inspire you, there are several things you need to consider before making the leap and purchasing one.

designer sofa in living room

What Kind of Sofa Do You Need in This Room?

There are so many considerations when you need a new sofa. A sleeper sofa is an ideal solution for those without a guest room or those with children whose friends sometimes sleep at their homes. Far from the unattractive and uncomfortable futon, modern sofa beds feature sleek designs and offer soothing comfort.

If you don’t need an extra sleeping space, there are still many considerations when investing in a new sofa. You should carefully analyse the room, as well as the uses of the sofa, before committing to a purchase.

How Many People Will Need a Seat?

A two-person sofa, also sometimes called a loveseat, offers seating space for two adults comfortably. These can typically hold three or more children. For larger families or spaces frequented more by adults, however, a sofa designed to seat only two people may feel restrictive or cramped.

Sofas designed for three adults may be a better option for those who entertain frequently. In addition to being longer, these sofas can typically support more weight as well. That may make them a better choice for households with more people. For some families, matching lounge suites that offer multiple spaces to sit may be the best option.

What Does the Space Allow?

A sofa is a large piece of furniture, even if you go for a more compact two-seat option. Whether you’re replacing an older sofa or buying the first piece for a new home, you need to consider the size and feel of the room.

The design of the sofa, including the colours, shape, and stuffing should all reflect your intended use of the sofa and the room it will be in.
Is this sofa going into a sitting room or formal parlour? If the room is highly stylized but receives little traffic, it may make sense to invest in a show-stopping sofa with bold colours or a strong pattern.

You won’t have to worry about wear to the sofa, and it can provide real visual appeal in a room intended for entertaining guests.

A designer sofa in stylish living room

On the other hands, sofas that will see daily use and heavy wear require a different approach. You need to consider how well the fabric will hold up to routine use and potential staining.
The overall structure of the sofa also matters. Your selection will need to be sturdy enough to withstand regular abuse by household members.
Finally, the density and material of the stuffing will matter. You don’t want the whole thing going flat after only a few months of use. Denser foam and similar fillers are ideal for a daily-use sofa, while natural fillings may be a better option for sofas that only see occasional use.

Making Savvy Design Choices When Purchasing a Sofa

Given that they can cost bit, you want to pick a sofa that you’ll enjoy looking at and sitting on for many months to come.

Once you’ve decided how you’ll use your sofa – and how much – you can move on to ensuring that the new piece of furniture will fit with your overall design for the room and the home.

Overall Shape and Materials Matter

Homes outfitted in a Classical design will require different sofas than those with a more Modern or Art Deco feel. Thankfully, there are many options available to you when selecting a sofa beyond just function and size.

Sofas modelled after classic pieces may have carefully polished exposed wood on the back, arms, and legs. More modern pieces could have stark, clean lines and minimal design elements.

Would your space benefit from a rounded back or something more rectangular? Will overstuffed cushions encased in leather bring a comfortable feel to your room, or would you prefer something more slender and sleek?

Do you imagine armrests that rise straight up, perpendicular to the seat, or do you prefer the elegant outward slope of diagonal armrests?

Colour and Texture Have Profound Visual Impact

The colour of the upholstery, as well as the legs and any visible structural elements, will impact the visual appeal of your sofa.

White sofas cushions, for example, speak of minimalism and cleanliness, although they may feel less inviting to guests. Neutral earth tones, on the other hand, could encourage guests and loved ones to take a seat without worrying about staining or spilling on the sofa.

Many sofas come in a single colour, but you can also find some beautifully patterned upholstery. A single colour sofa is often the best option for one that endures regular use, while bright and bold patterns could make a beautiful sofa more of a focal point in a room.

Aside from colour, you should also think about the texture of the upholstery on your sofa. Is it leather, suede, or synthetic? Is it plush or woven? Are the cushions and seats one long expanse of fabric, or are they broken up into geometric, tufted areas? The decorative buttons and patterns created by a tufted sofa could be the perfect way to break up the textural monotony of a space.

It’s important to remember that no single design element will please everyone. You should consider the visual impact you want from a sofa, but also prioritize your own design aesthetic when making your final selection.

Glam It Up: Our Epic Guide to Add the Glam Style to Your Home

Glam It Up: Our Epic Guide to Add the Glam Style to Your Home

by Brosa Design · Sep 25, 2018

Redecorating your home requires a plan and a general idea of what you’re trying to do. If you start getting pieces without an overall goal, you’ll wind up with a chaotic jumble of mismatched decor.

Glam style, a popular interior décor option, is short for glamorous. Think “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” or classic Hollywood. While you may not be fabulously wealthy, there’s something to be said for making an impression. Glam style is all about flash and accent, without being gaudy about it.

Not sure how to effect Glam in your home? Not to worry. Below we’ve provided some tips to help you decorate your home in Glam style.

A glam style living room

Floors: Keep It Elegant

Glam style is all about class and elegance. Dark, laminated woods are the way to go. You can leave it this way if you like, but wouldn’t it be better to glitz up your living space with a little colour? An area rug can make a star-worthy statement piece or accent to tie the room together.

Carpeting: It’s All about Being Plush

Luxury is the name of the game for rugs. You want organic materials here, namely wool. High-pile fabrics make for a plush walking surface and a sumptuous appearance. You can either go with wall-to-wall carpeting or you can use area rugs.

Should you go with solid colours or patterns? Solid colours are fine, but they can lack the ‘oomph’ visual factor that patterns have. Go for simple, yet bold geometric patterns. The more colour contrast, the better.

Invest in Some Glam Furniture

Use furniture that has wooden frames. Straight-backed wooden chairs with plush upholstery exude Glam style. Nail-head accents on the furniture can be a nice touch, but don’t overdo it. Too much of one type of decor can ruin a look.

Want to feel like a star? Use a mirrored console table as an accent piece. It looks almost like a makeup table and works for just about any room.

Mirrored finishes on any piece of furniture can have a striking effect, but as with nail-head accents, use them sparingly. Mirror accents can reflect too much light and overwhelm the eyes.

Glitz up your bedroom by plopping a mirrored vanity opposite the bed. You can sit on a beautiful leather ottoman and put on makeup for your work day. Lights, commute, paycheque.

You want Glam furniture to catch the light. It might not be a spotlight, but it’s the star of your rooms’ decor. Put the biggest items in the centre of the room.

You need at least one large piece of furniture – a sofa or some chairs – with upholstery, preferably with embellishments.

Colours: Go for Muted Luxury

Don’t go overboard when you pick your colour scheme. Glam is about luxury, but older glam is about muted luxury. You want to look good, not gaudy. Neutral tones, such as black, white, tan, and cream work well as bases.

Accents such as gemstone colours, black (if the main colour is white, and vice versa), and muted monochromatic hues form the essence of classic Glam colour schemes.

Under the right lighting, it can transform a space from meh to stunning. Just like a movie star. We’ll get to the lighting in a bit.

Be careful not to get too many decorations because it can lead to clutter. Glam should look neat, well-organized, and classy. Clutter is the opposite of that.

Layout: Does Every Room Have a Large Accent Piece?

With Glam style, you need a single large accent piece in each room. The living room has the sofa; the dining room has the table, and the bedroom has … well, you can probably guess.

These pieces need to have the starring role in each room’s decor, with the other elements playing supporting roles.

Put the main accent piece in the centre of the room. If you can‘t do this, put it next to a wall, but have all eyes immediately drawn toward it.

Position smaller pieces in a flanking position. Chairs should go beside sofas or tables. If the centrepiece is a fireplace, consider something like wall sconces. Balance is the key.

Lighting: Go Opulent with a Chandelier

Your Glam furniture’s mirror finish won’t do any good if there’s no light to reflect from it. Large floor lamps are the easiest to install and use. If you can find one with a dimmer switch, it’s even easier.

Of course, for maximum effect, you could install a chandelier. That is, you could have someone install it for you. Chandeliers scream elegance. Chandeliers come in a variety of designs. The classic candlestick collection with glass bowl beneath is the simplest form.

The good thing about chandeliers is that they cast multidirectional light with built-in shading and contrast. The best place for one of these is the living room or dining room, where most of your guests will see it.

If your master bedroom is big enough, a chandelier can look great hanging over your bed. Just make sure it’s secure; you don’t want to wake up to glass falling on your head.

Glam style is one of the most classic and enduring house decor styles. By adding subtly regal touches, colours, and using properly accented furniture, you can feel just like Bogart, Hepburn, De Niro, or any of the Hollywood greats getting ready for a shoot.

Muted colours with powerful accents are the order of the day, as are mirrored furniture finishes. Placing your light sources effectively can vastly enhance the reflectiveness and appearance of your focal pieces.
